Yes, it can be tough to manage to so many contacts. For me, Tweetdeck has been a help for sure. There is also Peoplebrowsr.com. Both allow you to add folks you follow to groups to make them easier to watch. Several twitter folks I know create a favorites group to watch folks they are close to.

Whatever you decide, it's okay. Two profiles might make your life easier. There is no right or wrong there.

I vote for you keeping just one profile. There is nothing wrong with a business user being a bit social at times. Especially if it influences people to give a follow and get engaged in conversation.

Just this evening, I was wondering about creating a second profile.

You see, when I was new to Twitter and only had a hundred or so people I was following, it was easy to keep up with and stay connected to my favorite people. Now that my Twitter world has mushroomed to 1300-1400 people (and my available Twit-time has shrunk), I'm not able to keep up with anyone!

I had thought of setting up an account that would be much smaller and more selective, limited to those people I'm most interested in interacting with. Sounds like a great idea... but I probably won't do it.

Still, I'm curious as to how other people deal with this situation...

I only have one. I originally signed up for all my social media sights under my company's name (execbp), thinking at the time that I was going to instantly create some kind of revenue generating stream for myself, and all I had to do was put my feet up and wait for it to happen. I quickly learned that there was more to it than that, and kind of focused more on the social side. What I had created under my name, I did not want to undo, however, nor did I want to start over with my own name. Besides, I am still kind of out there with the dual purpose of having fun and building awareness of my brand, so I am just leaving it all in one place while I try to find my voice.

Thanks lucky for the insight about this topic. The line is blurrier yet as things continue down the road we're on.

I'm in agreement about multiple profiles that aren't different. WTH? Not sure what the point is unless they are trying to draw hits in for a blog or ad or whatever.

Yes, being a real person will garner lots more attention and feedback than just spewing out links to posts etc. Not sure anyone really cares that much. Why they wouldn't just subscribe to the blog I wouldn't know.

With the line between business and pleasure getting fuzzier every day, it's hard to figure out what to do. There really are no best practices for these things yet because they are so new and changing faster than practices can be made.
Some people want to separate their 2 lives and others want to combine everything into one place.
The thing I don't understand is the same people creating multiple profiles to do the same thing and even friend the same people.

Common sentiment Kim. Lots of folks just cruise their stream anyway, even with few folks they follow. I tend to think of mine as a gestalt or having a life of its own. It can be a big time sink if not carefully kept in check.

I have 2 profiles. One is @romission for comunicating with my english speakers friends, mostly christians and @voiculesti where I twitt in romanian for my unbeliever friends.

I can barely keep up with one. I've had to remove people who I like but who twitter too much for me to keep up with. Fine line between useful/informative and time sink for me.

Wayne, thanks for dropping by and commenting both.

Your example for multiple profiles really stands out. Those profiles having something in common, excepting @waynesutton, they aren't about Wayne Sutton specifically. I'd certainly recommend others do the same for each organization they are in.

The problem I seem to have is seeing the same face on different profiles, with the same description etc, even the links sometimes the same, but different profile names. Not like what you're doing at all. Sad.

I have more than 10 twitter profiles. I used them for different audiences. I have some for conferences, by topic & location. Sometimes I do follow the same people but it depends on the need of the profile.

But none of the accounts I use for just spamming twitter. Example @waynesutton @triangletweetup @barcamprdu etc

Your use of two profiles makes sense. I'd wager though that your 2nd profile isn't following anyone right?

If I had a second one right now, i'd probably use it to follow certain folks vs broadcast.

Some folks are addicted to profiles, but most with two profiles are doing business on one and chatting on the other.

I'd have more if I had to separate out stuff like that.

I have 2 Todd: 1 that I post updates to, and one that I flow all my blog posts through. I have 2 in case I ever decide I want to write under my full name (philgerbyshak) instead of just my nickname (philgerb).

I only I profile :-) I don't see why anyone would need more than one, may be if they have one for the business and one for friends?! Or could it be they got kick out and now they make a new one!?
