Excellent article! A must for all people new to Twitter.

One thing I would add... If you really want to have someone follow you back, start a conversation with them. I know I have enough people that I follow already. I don't need to follow anyone who is not going to add value to my world.

Geechee - I so agree; it's just a starter list. Something to get folks going at least in a generally good direction. Better is the sharing of folks like you that could help get people on track.

I so wish someone would have reached out to me more as well. It took me quite a while to really enjoy twitter for lack of good support.

Excellent advice. I can't tell you how many newcomers voice their Twitter frustrations to me because they hadn't taken the steps that you described. This will definitely help them.

Seth - thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Love the tip about making the first move. I've long ago gotten over the fear of introducing myself to folks I'm interested in. Heck, it really helps to know if they'll reply at all. I'm totally about the conversation!

Also, adding slow is best. Currently I'm only adding folks that are going to follow me back. I follow enough folks that don't follow back now.

Thanks too for the reminder about using your real name. if you'll be doing business, it's the only way to go.

Tweetdeck is another great suggestion, though any client is better than none.

Also, the Tweetburner tip is a good one as well. Thanks for that.

No worries there, I like your tweets! But now I have TweetDeck so I can move you around to different groups as the mood strikes.

So here's a recommendation from this Twitter-newb - look into TweetDeck, it lets you organize the incoming tweets and has some nice features like URL shortening and spell check!

I would add don't follow too many people at first. If I get a new follower who's following 173 and has 7 following her, what do I think? Spammer. Add people slowly. My network on twitter increases every month, I'm just moving slowly.

Also, if you follow someone you don't know too well, make the first move. @ Reply to something they say. Just make a comment on something they say. If you want them to follow you back, that's almost a requirement.

Gosh I'm glad I met you at BarCamp St. Louis and you just talked me through all this. Very good advice for new Twitterers.

You forgot to mention that you had me put my real name in my profile in addition to my ID so that people that are looking for me in a Twitter search can find me.

I also find I'm more willing to follow people back now that I set up a group on Tweetdeck. I've got my favorite friends in that group so I see all their tweets, and when I have time, I get caught up on the full stream for those I'm following.

One last tip to newbies - use tweetburner.com to shorten your links. You can track your links that you post and see how many times they get clicked on. It really does make you feel good to know that people are listening to the stuff you put out into the blogosphere.
